Book Affordable Flight Tickets to Alicante

The idyllic tourist town of Alicante lies on the southeastern Mediterranean coast of Spain. It has the sun, sand and sea, the features that attract tourists like bees to flowers, especially from the sun-deprived European hinterland. Alicante was inhabited for 7000 years. The slopes of Mount Bencantal were perhaps the first region. It has been under the rule of different cultural emperors at various points in history. The Romanised name Lucentum was adapted to al-Laqant by the Arabs, and it is the supposed nearest version of the name Alicante. Alicante is a typical Mediterranean terrain with olives, citrus, mild winters, plenty of sun, and white beach sands. It is best known for the delectable dessert wine Fondillon, made from overripe grapes. The headquarters of the European Union Intellectual Property Office is here. Some 25000 students attend the University of Alicante, making it a renowned educational centre. It is served by Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport. There are regular ferry services to Algeria and Balearic Islands. The strongly fortified spacious harbour is an important port of call for many cruises and ships, emphasising its significance as a tourist hotspot.

What to see in Alicante

Alicante was one of the fastest-growing towns in the tourism sector till the recession of 2008 derailed the momentum. There are many gems from history that hold up its reputation. The old town, Barrio de la Santa Cruz, is a colourful postcard Kaleidoscope with active nightlife. The Santa Barbara Castle, located atop Mount Bencartel, is the chief point of attraction. It is a 9th-century fortification with a birds-eye view of the city. It is flanked by L'Ereta Park from the castle to the old city at the foothills. The park is a view with several routes, observation decks, and rest stops to witness beauty all around. One of the most famous Spanish promenades is Explanada de Espana, made from a record 6.5 million marble tiles. It extends from the Port of Alicante to the Gran via where the famous statue of Mark Hersch is. This promenade is a site for outdoor musical concerts and strolling (paseo) along the waterfront. Similarly, El Palmeral Park is also a venue for walking, playgrounds, ponds, brooks and an auditorium for concerts. There are several beautiful churches and cathedrals like the Basilica of St. Maria (14th-16th century), the Co-Cathedral of St. Nicholas of Bari, the monastery of Santa Faz, and the Convent of the Canonigas de San Agustin. Other notable architecture includes Huerta de Alicante, Casa de La Asegurada (1685), Casa consistorial de Alicante, Gravina Palace, and Castle of San Fernando. Besides, there are about a dozen museums to boast about like MARQ and MACA. There are many sun-kissed beaches like Playa del Postiguet, San Juan Playa, Playa de Almadraba Playa de la Albufereta, Poniente y Levante beaches in Benidorm, Cap de l'Horta, Playa de Los Saladares, Calas de Alicante, Cala Cantalar, Playa de Mutxavista, Cala de la Palmera, Playa de San Gabriel, etc. Some other nearby places to see are Museo the Ocean Race, and El castell de Guadalest Canelobre Caves.

What to do in Alicante

With its typical Mediterranean coast, Alicante is a great family destination. The sun, sand, and sea afford plenty of activities to do and adventures to experience. The "White Land" complements the sea with its beautiful rugged topography, made more beautiful by man-made endeavour, over the ages. The beautiful monuments, ornate parks and gardens, and meticulous town planning have ample space for recreation and destressing of its people. There are markets and public places in beautiful neighbourhoods, with a spirited day and active nightlife, so typical of the Spanish spirit and Mediterranean culture. The Spanish tradition of fiesta and siesta is very much evident here.

One can start the exploration of the city on foot, bike or have an aerial view. Although Mount Bencartil has lifts inside to take up the tourists atop the peak onto the Santa Barbara Castle, an uphill trek is a beautiful experience. Similarly walking around the ruins of Castell de Sant Ferran, is an interface with history. Strolling around Marina Deportiva is like window shopping in a luxe mall to check out the luxury yachts and ships. Morant Park is a family hotspot with gaming zones, greenery and walking spots. The adventurous explorer can look forward to activities in the air and water. There is paragliding and parasailing at Costa Blanca. The Elche Zoo "Rio Safari '' offers a novelty, a train safari right amid exotic wildlife. Terra Mitica is another good amusement park.

Spain has a very long tradition of bullfighting as a form of public recreation. Plaza de Toros Alicante is the bullfighting arena of the town. The sporting spirit can be channelised at Cala del Morro Blanc for swimming and diving, at Serra Grossa for mountain hiking and trail running, or at scenic and serene golf courses along the coast, for training an eagle's eye. Another high-adrenaline activity is rappelling and canyoning at the gorge of L'Estrat de Los Penyes. Flyboarding is another such activity. If one wants to unwind the soul, there are yachting and catamaran excursions. If one wants to escape the tailormade city entertainment, one can go to charming villages like Altea and Villajoyosa. Canelobre Caves and El Castell de Guadalest, a beautiful mountainous town, make for exciting day trips. Tabarca Island is an offshore archipelago which gives aqua tours.

Spain is not very far off from these meccas of art. The MACA Contemporary Art Museum houses numerous Picassos. The Gravina Museum of Fine Arts (MUGAB) gives out art lessons for free. Teatro Principal Theatre is the main performing arts centre in the city. There are several other museums to cater to every field. Counter to the classical performing arts, there are plenty of modern clubs which play electronic music like Metro Dancing Club, Confetti and Magma. Marcarock Club is famous for punk and metal music. The Marmara Mediterranean Cocktail Club is a famous nightclub, known for its restaurant and pool bar club's all-night parties. Casino Mediterraneo Alicante is also a throbbing youth hot spot.

If you are in Spain and do not partake in the local festivals, much of the Spanish spirit is lost. The most famous festival is the Fogueres De Sant Joan festival at the end of June. Other notable fiestas are Easter Holy Week, the City Carnival at the end of February and Moros y Cristianos in the districts of Altozano or San Blas.
